After one week of having this little Tumblr up and running, I was thrilled to hear from Rishi Desai, the Founder/Director of Parsons School of Design’s Sustainable Design Review, inviting me to have GreenDesignGirl.com syndicated on their web.site. Of course, I’m proud to be involved because Parsons is my alma mater, but more so because of all of the amazing things that the school is doing in the areas of education and the promotion of sustainable design.
Last year The Sustainable Design Review held their inaugural student competition, in which students were asked to “define sustainablity in their own creative way and present a concept that exemplifies their own unique notion of sustainability”. Caroline Pham’s Subway Light Project was the winning entry, selected by a well respected panel of eco.savvy judges. You can see excellent pix and explanations of the winning entry and finalists in this PDF doc here.
This year, the focus of the competition is on sustainable retail design and I’m really looking forward to seeing what the finalists come up with. Students from all across New School University [Parsons’ umbrella], were keen to apply last year and I’m betting that the response will be incredible this Spring.
Then there’s the New School University Sustainability Committee, who are busy planning a gazillion events, meetings, discussions and the New School’s participation in the upcoming Focus The Nation on January 31st, “a national teach-in engaging millions of students and citizens with political leaders and decision makers about Global Warming Solutions.” New School will contribute with a long and stimulating day of 28 back-to-back student/teacher talks and featured guest speakers.
PHEW! — and I haven’t even touched upon everything that these great student organizations are doing to spread the green love! As an alumni member I’m just pleased to be a part of it all, however small, by contributing to their site with my happy little blog. Not a bad way to start things off in tumblelog land, huh?
