Bamboo Ottoman by Bettencourt @ Vivavi.
The eco.chic Bamboo Ottoman is made by Bart Bettencourt, a Brooklyn based furniture designer and cabinet maker whose focus is to merge sustainability and innovative design. He is also known for utilizing recycled materials and for his work with the Certified Forest Products Council, now known as metaFore.
Bettencourt has a great contemporary line of furniture available at Vivavi, a favourite green design shop of mine, from which I’ve featured modern bamboo pieces and recycled seatbelt furniture before. If you’re into clean-lined pieces with simple geometric proportions, Bettencourt’s creations [and most of Vivavi’s lines in general], will certainly satisfy.
Regular GDG readers know how much I love bamboo. I’m thrilled to see it used in so many applications, from flooring to textiles to furniture and beyond. Vivavi’s site explains “Bamboo is nature’s most sustainable resource, is grown without pesticides or chemicals, is 100% biodegradeable, and naturally regenerative. Bamboo is actually a tropical grass, with an extensive root system that sends out an average of four to six new shoots per year, naturally replenishing itself and growing to heights of 60 feet or more. Some bamboo species grow up to 4 feet per day and can be harvested every 3 to 4 years.” Bamboo is most definitely our friend.
Bettencourt ups the eco.points on his Bamboo Ottoman by upholstering it with sustainable hemp, using non-toxic adhesives and finishing it all off with a VOC-free Danish Oil. The upholstery is also available in a rich earthy grey.
