Some of Green Design Girl’s readers have found this site because they are fans of HGTV’s Designer Superstar Challenge, in which I appeared as a contestant in Season 4 in 2007. I’ve had a few e.mails asking about applications for the 5th season of the show, but unfortunately, the production has run its course and there will not be a Season 5.
I guess that four years was enough for HGTV Canada [it’s a hell of a production to put on, starting with thousands of applicant tapes to sift through]. Besides, they’re now offering the U.S. version called HGTV Design Star, so who really needs two shows with the same premise on the same network?! That would be design reality overkill.
As for the Canadian version [which was the original], 5.6 million HGTV Canada subscribed viewers tuned in each week to watch us sweat it out to “design challenges”. I was one of the finalists and the sole designer from my home city of Toronto. It was an unforgettable experience, having made some new friends and extremely valuable contacts along the way. As a fun bonus, it was also a trip to be recognized on the street, in restaurants and bars, out grocery shopping and even while picking up my dry cleaning[!] by fans of the show this past year.
The amount of fan e.mails I received was also a pleasant surprise and it’s awesome to see that many of you have joined us green design lovahs here on GDG!
So I’m sorry to disappoint if you’re reading this in Canada and you were hoping to have a go at it this year. If you’re a U.S. citizen, and if they’re planning on having Season 4, you may still have a shot at applying for HGTV’s Design Star. Season 3 will begin airing on HGTV U.S. in June of ’08.
Personally, I’m a bigger fan of Bravo’s Top Design, with the exception of Jonathan Adler’s signature kissoff: “See you later, decorator.” Someone needs to eliminate that.
