Tally Lacma Ring by frucci

Amazing! Artist Francesca Vitali has handmade this piece, using a newsletter from the L.A. Craft Museum as her recycled source, along with beautifully textured silver. I’ll be posting more of her designs soon. I am frucci smitten!

“3 little terrariums, sittin’ on a ledge”

The terra-love continues on GDG. These recycled light bulb creations are by Juliette Melton, who has graciously shared her DIY recipe and is also available for commissioned projects. If you’re in San Francisco, her clever Tiny Terras are available at Modern Eden, though I bet they won’t last long. I’d personally scoop up at least three of them at once — pronto.

The New York Times story I posted earlier on the popularity of terrariums [aka vivariums], inspired me to have a look around at the different designs currently available. It’s no surprise that the clean and modern lines of these Danish Terrariums caught my eye.
These terra-beauties are “crafted from mouth-blown glass” with a “solid paulowina wood base & spherical wooden top.” Paulownia is a fast-growing tree that has proven to be quite beneficial when used in reforestation efforts in its native China. I love the added warmth of the wood in these styles, compared to the all clear glass models that seem to be more readily available, though I’d definitely make exceptions for these + these recycled chic pieces.

The Newspaper Cuff by Gi and Pindo
I just made another green Etsy discovery, this time via Gissi, a long-time GDG reader and fellow Tumblr! I’m surprised that I didn’t come across her eco-trinkets sooner, which she makes with her design partner-in-crime Pindo. The collection is made from 100% recycled newspaper and is sealed for a waterproof satin finish.
The cuffs are available in a variety of colours and incorporate silk flowers and leaves, which are are distressed to give the final result a vintage look. If you’re less into flowers and more into the cosmic, you’ll probably dig the tall Eco Stars. Gi and Pindo offer additional sizes and colours, via custom order, upping their unique status even further.

Bamboo Owl Clock by Decoy Lab
I just came across the lovely creations of Decoy Lab on Etsy. Most of their clocks and home accessories seem to be laser cut, using the ever sustainable bamboo. The owl and nature trends are bigger than ever this year — in everything from jewellery and fashion to wallpaper and home décor accessories.

I am even more smitten with the delicate Kirie Bamboo Clock, named after the Japanese word for ”paper cutting”, from which the artist has drawn inspiration.
I could spend hours on Etsy. They have so many talented artists and unique designs on the site, just waiting to be discovered.

Vinyl Record Stand

I’ve got a few crates of vinyl records from my spinning days, but I’ve only kept the ones that I consider real gems, so I doubt that I’d have the heart to morph any of them into a stand like this one… as cool as it looks, and as popular as it is to upcycle vinyl these days. Though really, I might be persuaded to give up a rare 12” for a trinket from this vinyl-tastic collection. Maybe.

“Cocoon by Swedish Designer Måns Salomonsen is decoration, storage and cultivation for the kitchen window.”

I’m in serious love with this unique and clever design. Cocoon is made from clay, which allows the water from whatever you’re cultivating above to be absorbed, and when evaporated, cools down the produce in the storage below. Be sure to check out Salomonsen’s creatively upcycled project, too.
