Tally Lacma Ring by frucci

Amazing! Artist Francesca Vitali has handmade this piece, using a newsletter from the L.A. Craft Museum as her recycled source, along with beautifully textured silver. I’ll be posting more of her designs soon. I am frucci smitten!

The Newspaper Cuff by Gi and Pindo
I just made another green Etsy discovery, this time via Gissi, a long-time GDG reader and fellow Tumblr! I’m surprised that I didn’t come across her eco-trinkets sooner, which she makes with her design partner-in-crime Pindo. The collection is made from 100% recycled newspaper and is sealed for a waterproof satin finish.
The cuffs are available in a variety of colours and incorporate silk flowers and leaves, which are are distressed to give the final result a vintage look. If you’re less into flowers and more into the cosmic, you’ll probably dig the tall Eco Stars. Gi and Pindo offer additional sizes and colours, via custom order, upping their unique status even further.

Vinyl Record Stand

I’ve got a few crates of vinyl records from my spinning days, but I’ve only kept the ones that I consider real gems, so I doubt that I’d have the heart to morph any of them into a stand like this one… as cool as it looks, and as popular as it is to upcycle vinyl these days. Though really, I might be persuaded to give up a rare 12” for a trinket from this vinyl-tastic collection. Maybe.

“Go vote on the Spring Greening Contest at Inhabitat.com! Take a look at my Magazine Shelf made from National Geographic magazines. Thanks!”

Sean Miller’s entry is probably the most creative re-use of National Geographic magazines that I’ve ever seen. Check out some great close ups of the shelf here.

Earth Day 2010 :: Illustration by Tracy Walker.
This is definitely my favourite Earth Day poster so far, from Earth Day Canada. It’s very mod-meets-green and especially ideal for retro design lovers. The ones currently in distribution have been printed on 50% post-consumer paper, using waterless printing [a more eco-friendly approach than traditional lithographic printing].
To see the poster in its entirety, or to snag your own PDF version [and other cool Earth Day posters, calendars and widgets, too], click here. I’m currently lovin’ it as my desktop wallpaper. I also encourage you to visit Tracy Walker’s site directly, to see more of the beautiful works by this Uxbridge, Ontario artist, whose influences include architecture, gardening and the iconic murals of Diego Rivera.
Earth-lovin’ Canadians can visit this handy interactive map to see a huge list of the Earth Day events happening across the country. There’s even an option to register your own event on the site. For our U.S. neighbours, they’ve got you fully covered here. Of course, the official Earth Day Network has an impressive global list of countries. From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe: No greenie left behind!
My fave part of the poster? “Make every day Earth Day.” Mother Nature would be proud.
Have a stellar one, my friends.

Log Bowls by Doha Chebib of Loyal Loot Collective
I’m thrilled to see that these beautiful green designs have been making the rounds on Tumblr. I first wrote about the talented Loyal Loot Collective back in March of 2008 and featured these gorgeous logs, made from reclaimed wood, after seeing them during design week in Toronto… but they had actually caught my eye at the groundbreaking Cabin by Motherbrand exhibit in NYC, back in 2004.
I love that these crafty Canadians are still pumping out smart and quirky designs, and with a brand new web-site to boot. I look forward to seeing what they come up with next.
