The TransNeomatic collection is another smart line on display at Artecnica’sDesign With A Conscience exhibit at the New York International Gift Fair. This eco.conscious series is designed by the talented Campana Brothers, whose gorgeous Brasilia table I have featured before.  What makes these accessory plates green? They’re cleverly made from repurposed scooter tires and natural wicker. Two materials that don’t immediately come to mind as a pair, but when I thought of all the bikes that I’ve seen with wicker baskets over the years [in a variety of shapes and colours], it seemed to make sense. Artecnica also supplies these plates with handwoven hemp covers and have packaged them in reusable drawstring totes. I love it when attention is given to every last detail.

TransNeomatic by Campana Brothers @ Artecnica. I think it’s great that they’ve managed to find a smart way to reuse these discarded scooter tires, given the millions of tires that end up rotting in tire piles each year…. and if you think that tire pile photo was mind-boggling, check out the rest of Edward Burtynsky’s industrial landscape photography here. Burtynsky’s an accomplished and well-respected photographer from Toronto and has been a fave of mine for many years. I’ll post about his work soon, which examines the intersection of humans, nature and industrial progress — often resulting in very gritty but beautiful and thought-provoking images.
