If you’re in New York City this week and you love unique gift ideas and eco.friendly design accessories, you should check out the Design With Conscience exhibit by L.A.’s Artecnica at the New York International Gift Fair.
You will not be disappointed with the vast array of original pieces on display. Artecnica’s philosophy? “Design With Conscience projects employ production methods that are human and environmentally friendly. We denounce child labor, promote safe, toxic-free environments, and use purchasing criteria that prevent labor and environmental exploitation. Our vision is to promote self-sustaining communities of skilled artisans in underdeveloped countries.”
Featured at the Design With Conscience Exhibit is the tranSglass collection by Dutch Designer extraordinaire Tord Boontje and his wife Emma Woffenden. These sleek designs are completely made from recycled glass bottles and are expertly handcrafted by artisans in Guatemala, making each piece unique. I appreciate the merging of old world craftsmanship with sophisticated design. A highly successful pairing with this stylish series.

Who says recycled can’t be beautiful?

This recycled glass bottle series includes a range of vases, tumblers, carafes, jugs and candlestick holders, most of which are available in either a polished or satin finish. How cool is it that you can still see the “750 ml” engraving on the bottom of that tumbler?

The recycled glass colours for this series are “pre-assorted in shades of green, clear and brown by the artisans only.” I like the simplicity of the clear glass vases with a polished finish.

I’m not sure if they started from scratch on this one, but it cleverly gives the illusion of two existing bottles having been joined together, doesn’t it? The ultra modern “Double Vase” is seamless and a definite conversation piece.
