UP THERE is a beautiful and breathtaking little film about mural hand painted advertising.
“I’ve seen traffic accidents. I’ve seen naked girls. I’ve seen shootings. I’ve seen fights. And they don’t even know that you’re there.” .:NYC Muralist
While living in New York, I was fascinated by two things that were close to the sky: The industrial rooftops that surrounded me… and the old school hand painting muralists that I was happy to catch in action from time to time. This short film is a great homage to these increasingly rare artists, who are rapidly being replaced by digitally printed vinyl.

The Rock Star Curse :: Directed by Craig Brownwigg :: Music by Eluvium
This creative spot is well produced and has some truly funny moments [especially the office scene]. It’s a promo for AdBands 6, an annual Toronto charity event where advertising industry professionals get up on stage and become rock stars for a night. How can they disappoint with band names like Ape The Temp, Beaver Fever and Your Mom Says Hi? The poser rocking is all for a good cause; in support of the Tennyson Quance Foundation for Autism. Click here for details and a very cool downloadable poster.

Hayaku: A Time Lapse Journey Through Japan by Brad Kremer
This stunning video includes views of Tokyo, Matsuyama, Imabari, Nagano, Gifu and Ishizushisan. The combination of these visuals with music by Röyksopp and The Album Leaf is simply breathtaking. I felt transported back to a land that holds a small piece of my heart, and from time to time, appears in my design work.
Creatively, Japan has so much to draw upon. From the glorious ancient architecture to the incredibly ultra modern; the beauty of the geishas to the sweetness of the kokeshi; the subtle elegance of the cherry blossoms to the bold edge of Harajuku. Of course, there are also the many rituals, festivals, traditional crafts, food, cinema, kabuki theatre, design shops, fashion, night life, technology and plenty more. Hai, design lover-san! Inspiration abounds in the land of Ando.

“The US cable channel Planet Green counts down their five favorite eco TEDTalks — with some great big visions to save the planet and the people on it.”
I’m a big TED fan and have really enjoyed some of their design and technology talks in the past. I’ve watched the inspiring and entertaining videos featuring legendary Designer Philippe Starck and nerdcore comedian Ze Frank a few times each. I’ll have to check out these eco TEDTalks soon, and if I love ‘em, I’ll be sure to share them here on GDG.
Domestic Transfomer Apartment by Gary Chang.
“The house transforms… and I don’t move. The house moves for me.”
This video just blew my mind. Hong Kong Architect Gary Chang took his 330 square foot apartment and made it transformable into 24 rooms, using a super sleek and futuristic sliding wall system. The results are green, clean and practical for someone in Chang’s case, living in a 7 million populated region where extreme tenement living is the norm.
Chang fittingly calls his home the “Domestic Transfomer.” My favourite of his transformations is the screening room, which features dramatic floor to ceiling visuals and a hammock hanging in the middle of the space. Of course, the micro-kitchen might be a challenge for many, but having lived in tiny shoebox Manhattan apartments before, I know it can be done. Now we just need to add a little robot dog and a screening of Blade Runner and the future-is-now scene is complete.

The Genesis † House was [controversially] designed by Planda and built on a cliff in California. The shape was inspired by the cover of an album by a Parisian group called Justice.
Thanks to simko for sharing this incredibly inspiring video of the new Genesis House in California. If you’re a Justice fan, you’ll immediately recognize the white cross that this home’s design was based on. The making of that 3D model took me right back to my school days at Parsons, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen AutoCAD used this way before. Seriously. They made AutoCAD look sexy?! A miracle indeed. The editing job on this vid is nothing short of brilliant.
On today, Green Design Girl’s 1 year anniversary on Tumblr, I’m celebrating with Justice. And some very cool architecture. Hit play above + join moi.
